The much-anticipated biopic Michael, which aims to chronicle the life and legacy of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, has encountered unexpected legal hurdles, resulting in extensive rewrites and reshoots. These developments have delayed the film’s release from April to October 2025.
The production team is reportedly addressing a legal oversight involving a settlement agreement with Jordan Chandler, a key figure in the controversial 1993 allegations against Jackson. The late pop icon settled the case out of court for $25 million, with the agreement barring the Chandler family from being depicted or referenced in any future media projects.

Initially, the film’s narrative, penned by screenwriter John Logan, heavily featured the Chandler case as a significant chapter in Jackson’s life. Lawyers reviewing the script flagged this issue late in production, forcing the filmmakers to rework the storyline to avoid violating the legally binding settlement.
While some outlets have described the situation as chaotic, insiders insist that the production remains on track. “The Michael Jackson biopic is not in disarray,” a source close to the project clarified. “Reports of a total halt are exaggerated. The reshoots are planned and manageable, with no compromise on the film’s vision.”

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, known for his work on Training Day, the biopic features Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in the titular role. The supporting cast includes Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Michael’s parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson, and Miles Teller as Jackson estate lawyer John Branca.
The project is being spearheaded by Graham King’s GK Films, the studio behind the Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody. Despite the setbacks, King and the creative team remain committed to delivering a compelling and respectful portrayal of Michael Jackson’s life, while navigating the complexities of his legacy.
The reshoots are scheduled for March 2025, with the updated release date set for October 3, 2025. Fans of the iconic entertainer are eagerly awaiting the film, which promises to delve into his artistry, personal struggles, and global impact. However, the latest developments highlight the delicate balancing act required to honor Jackson’s story while navigating the controversies that have long surrounded his life and career.
